I. Introduction Many Costa Rican's will tell you that the horse is the ultimate "all terrain vehicle" and that the best, most comfortable way to experience the rain forest is on the back of a well trained horse. The horse tradition of Costa Rica The genesis of Costa Rica was a society where settlers did not have a choice but to work, this small colony was very poor to start with, with no large indigenous population to subdue or use in one’s benefit like it happened in richer colonies, with the Aztec, Maya or Inca. Additionally the topography was difficult, full of little valleys, and lots of mountains. These conditions of relative isolation forged the essence and texture of the Costa Ricans (ticos): hard working, self sufficient, independent but genuinely friendly and helpful with foreigners . They also developed a respect and appreciation for horses as a highly valued possession which could make life a lot easier and even save your life at times. This love for horses has been enhanced and expanded through the years, horses today are still a precious possession and a national hobby. No matter were you go in the countryside you will find a Sunday cabalgata (horse ride) or a Tope (horse parade) where everyone proudly exhibits its horse, in a community event Horses at Hacienda Pozo Azul For years the owners and operators of Hacienda Pozo Azul, the Quintana family, have been horse lovers and active participants of horse rides throughout the country. What they offer you is their knowledge, experience and their high quality horses to assure you an unforgettable experience and the best way to truly get to know this beautiful country and enjoy their people. Hacienda Pozo Azul. Aside from being a 2000 Acre operating ranch, it is recognized as the destination of choice for nature adventures in Costa Rica, offering in addition to horses, white water rafting, tree canopy tours, rappelling, mountain bikes hiking trails, camping, bird watching and a butterfly garden, and a model 300 cow dairy. We operate a first class adventure operation, but horses are our specialty. We have been breading horses for our own use for tree generations, using the spirited, soft riding Costa Rican Paso horses and the strong and Spanish Andalusian horses, and lately quarter horses. Presently we are using more than 60 very well chosen horses. Ask for Our Horse Trek
