“A learning experience at the Tropical Rainforest”

General Objective

Develop a learning experience at the Tropical Rainforest with the purpose of getting the participants familiar with the ecosystem process and with the different actions taken on the sustainable use of the biodiversity.

Specific Objectives

  • Create a direct contact with the environment in a way that the students can have a learning experience.
  • Develop strategies through different activities that involve mental, physical and social areas to reinforce team work, autonomy, solidarity and confidence; those activities include adventure and exploration of the natural environment.
  • To involve topics of environmental interest with the activities and tours as well as including actions that have been implemented to the project using sustainable environmental criteria.
  • Incorporate the contents of the Public Education Program to the exploration activities for the experience to be used as a supporting tool in the educational process.

Characteristics

This activity is designed for the participants to discover the very particular characteristics of the Tropical Rainforest biodiversity. It is composed by different talks that focus on a specific theme and complemented by outdoor activities such as visits to the frog farm or the butterfly farm as well as adventure sports activities.

The camp can last one or two nights, depending on how many workshops are going to be enrolled. It includes an introduction talk with valuable information about the elected workshop, a hiking tour through the trails, an outdoor directed activity or a visit to the frog farm or the butterfly farm (depending on the subject chosen).  Also we have a One Day workshops, ask for it!!

Workshop Description

Amphibian and reptiles: This workshop is about the natural history of the different species of amphibious and reptiles that inhabit the tropical rainforest (habitat, behavior, reproduction, relations, usage, conservation, taxonomic information, diagnostic description). It includes a day or night hiking tour where the students can recognize and apply the acquired knowledge about the different species.

Biodiversity Uses: (Natural dye, medicinal plants among others). In this workshop the participant is introduced to the origin and the usage that has been given to different roots, fruits and seeds to obtain natural dyes and other raw materials.

Plants: An extensive talk about the variety of vegetal forms of the forest (habitat, behavior, reproduction, relations, usage, conservation, taxonomic information, diagnostic description). It includes an outdoor activity in the forest based on the information given.

Birds: Talk about the different species that inhabit in the tropical rainforest and their function in the ecosystem (habitat, behavior, reproduction, relations, usage, conservation, taxonomic information, diagnostic description). It includes an outdoor activity to identify species and their distribution in the forest.

Insects: Workshop about the different species that inhabit in the tropical rainforest and their function in the ecosystem (habitat, life cycle, feeding, host plant, metamorphosis, relations, conservation, taxonomic information, diagnostic description). It includes a hiking tour through the butterfly farm and trails (day and night) to identify the different insect species.
