Pozo Azul offers a life long learning experience of the magic of metamorphosis in butterflies, while you admire these beautiful creatures in our garden.

The small Country of Costa Rica has been blessed with an impressive biodiversity, the richness of butterfly species is no exception , with a reported total of 550 species, with the Sarapiquí region with 204 almost 50% of them.

The study of butterflies in Costa Rica and particularly in Sarapiquí goes back 30 years, its habits, host plants for eggs, feeding plants for caterpillars, and knowledge on plant defense compounds. This knowledge in the area has resulted in the business of farming butterflies. Their pupae exported to adorn gardens all over the world.

Nicho, a 22 year young sarapiquenian, practically grew with butterflies, with 10 year experience in handling and producing butterflies, manages the farm and the garden in Hacienda Pozo Azul. He is responsible for the collection of 20 odd butterflies species you will admire on the garden, as well as the production of pupae for export of specific species.

On the garden, we keep a colony of colorful dart frogs from the genus Dendrobates: the Blue Jeans because of the blue on the legs and the Commando named for the fatigue like colors, their life and habits are just as interesting as the butterflies.

Additionally we host the most beautiful and known frog in Costa Rica, the well known red eyes (agalichynis callydrias)
